What exactly does Medicare's 2009 exception on "Custodial Care" actually allow, regarding AT HOME care?
I understand that Medicare almost never pays for "custodial care". But in the 2009 "Medicare and You" book on page 38, under "What’s NOT Covered by Part A and Part B?", it says "Custodial is not covered EXCEPT, when you also get skilled nursing care in a skilled nursing facility, at home, or as part of hospice care.
For example, if my uncle is having his blood pressure and sugar checked in his kitchen, by a Visiting Registerd Nurse, can that nurse then bath him, dress him, feed him, and get him settled in his easy chair for the rest of the day? And have Part A or B cover all or most of it?
I just found a GREAT HomeCare PDF on Medicare.gov. It is very informative. It is called "MEDICARE and HOME HEALTH CARE" You can find it at http://www.medicare.gov/Publications/Pubs/pdf/10969.pdf
It has to be coded as custodial services and care for the claim to be paid by Medicare. If the RN codes her claim as general medical services, then medicare will likely deny it.
I will find the answer to this out exactly by tomorrow (have family who works in the business) if you haven't called CS, or had another answer that is satisfactory.
I am fairly sure it will be how it is coded though.
