Can rats develop bumblefoot if...?
I'm thinking about buying this cage called The Rat Tower from martinscages.com (http://www.martinscages.com/images/full/r-690.jpg) which has 3 additional levels not including the ground floor. The additional levels are made of 1/2" x 1/2" mesh wiring. I was just wondering if my ratties could still develop bumblefoot if they have a solid bottom covered in bedding. The cage is for my three boys. Logan and Ian are 4 months and Marley is 4 weeks old. I just want a safe good sized cage that is chew proof and can house 3-4 males. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, they can still get bumblefoot. But there is less of a chance since they will have a solid bottom with bedding. I suggest that you cover the mesh wiring floors with pieces of cloth (such as felt or another soft fabric). These not only will help protect against bumblefoot, but also help protect their nails from getting torn. (had that happen to a rat once, it isnt pretty, and its VERY painful for them.)
I personally dont like martins cages because they have wire mesh floors. So i personally would suggest getting a cage with plastic floors (or the new chew resistant plastic). Yeah, they can and will get chewed on, and you have to take more time to clean the cage, but it is safer for your ratties.
