Understanding Leather Bar Stool Seats
There are several things you need to be aware of when researching your dream stool. The first is that there are different types of leather.
Full Grain Leather
Full grain leather is made from premium raw material and a top skin that has not been touched up to cover imperfections. This leather is full of natural characteristics and it is a popular upholstery choice throughout the industry. It carries a distinctive smell and has a soft but strong texture, is hard wearing and will age well which makes it look more attractive with time. This combination of facets make it an ideal choice for home furnishings although it comes with a much higher price tag than any other leather type. It is an attractive finish for products such as bar stools, chairs, sofas etc.
Split Leather
This is leather that has been split from the skin of the hide very carefully. If the hide is thick, it can be split down even further and the thicker the hide, the more splits it can sustain. This type of split leather can be more fragile than the full grain leather but is often treated to make up for the difference and make it more hard wearing. Split leathers can have patterns embossed into them or be buffed to create suede.
Suede (also known as Nubuck or Buffed Leather)
This is created by removing the grain or by a splitting operation between the hide and skin. You will normally find this buffed and brushed, creating a soft fuzzy surface. Suede is normally cheaper than full grain leather as several pieces of suede can be divided down from one drop split, whereas there is only one top grain per skin. Suede leather can be hard to protect and damages easily when it comes into contact with liquid and as such is not a popular choice for contract or domestic products due to it's fragile nature.
Regenerated Leather
Unlike real untreated leather, regenerated leather has a completely smooth texture. The smooth finish is produced during a special manufacturing process that compresses the fibres of the untreated leather. This is a very popular choice for contract markets, particularly commercial seating for bars and restaurants due to it's extra durability and cost to make.
Bicast Leather (also known as coated leather)
This leather is made up of low grade or regenerated leather which is finished by applying a thick layer of polyurethane to it. The polyurethane coating makes the material much stronger and highly durable; making it perfect for constant use, especially in commercial bar stools, chairs and other products that may be upholstered.
Please Note : Normal leather cleaning creams should not be used on the top surface as it is polyurethane finished and could get damaged.
Faux Leather
It is very difficult to tell the difference between a real leather and a man-made leather imitation. Manufacturing processes are so advanced now that they have very similar textures and qualities and because Faux Leather is made from synthetic materials, rather than natural ones, it is more durable and easier to produce making it ideal for kitchen and dining bar stools where frequent use and spillages will be taking place. Faux leather is very popular in the commercial market.
