What size road bike frame do i need?
I am hoping to build my own road bike, but I am not sure what size frame I need or what type. I am about 5' 11'' and I need a bike that I can use for quick trips or for long rides.
Rich's answer is partially wrong.
19" is a good starting point if you are 5'4".
The suggestion of 56 cm to 58 cm is a very good starting point.
As also noted, beware of length of top tube and length of steerer tube. Women tend to be long legged in proportion to the length of the torso. While it is easy to acquire the correct saddle height, getting the correct length of top tube can be very hard.
Here is another serious suggestion. FOR ME, most bikes are too short in the steerer tube. I NEED my handlebars as high as the seat. Most bikes are built for racing. Bars can be as much as six inches below seat height. Situation has been worse with the advent of the threadless headsets.
The front of my custom framed tandem is 60 cm from bottom bracket to top tube and the steerer tube is 9-1/2" long. I use two spacers and a high rise Salsa handlebar stem. No stock bike is built this way. My single bike has an extra long steerer and is equipped with a threaded headset and high rise quill stem.
