Thai Meditation
Could a Kung Fu / Muay THai hybrid work?

I have been studying Kung Fu from a local studio. I have recently come to realize that they brand of Kung Fu I am taking is a non-contact, routine memorizing, exercise routine.

Upon this realization I signed up for Muay Thai, which is a much more practical, hands on, fighting style. I really enjoy it.

My question is this, would a hybrid of the two work?

Kung Fu has a lot of things that I enjoy, such as the stealth, quite movements. The meditation. Some of the strikes are interesting and could be useful as well.

Opinions?

This reminds me of the age old debate of fighting vs forms. Some people say that in order to learn how to fight, you need to spar and practice on another person (in a controlled you-punch-I-respond-repeat manner) and not waste your times on forms. Others say that everything you need to know in learning to fight is in the forms. Most people tend to be somewhere in the middle, but tend to lean one way or the other.

I personally lean toward the kata side. I spar of course, and I enjoy it and learn from it- and if all I did was kata, I'd throw myself out the dojo window- but the kata contains the actual techniques- including the lethal or dangerous techniques that you can't practice on another person. The "problem" is that in modern martial arts you typically study a kata for 3-4 months and then move on to the next. To actually UNDERSTAND the kata actually takes years- even decades. I have three more years until I will receive a black belt in my school, and then I'll be ready to learn Karate.

I didn't mean to give a sermon (and I haven't answered your question), but what I wanted to suggest was asking your Sifu about what he/she suggests concerning learning sparring (he/she may just shoot you down). The other thing I would suggest is seeing if you can't find a Karate dojo that offers sparring, since Karate is more closely related to Kung Fu than Muay Thai.
